I wasn't raised in the south, but come from southern stock (both sets of paternal great-grandparents were born and raised in Alabama before moving to Oklahoma where their children (my grandparents, who raised me) were born. My Grandmother made sweet cornbread, with white flour and white cornmeal, just like her mother before her did, and just like I do now. I agree that the best way to make cornbread is the way you like it, and I like it sweet (unless I'm making it for cornbread dressing, 'cause "sugar don't belong in dressin", I also switch to yellow cornmeal when making cornbread for dressing, just as Grandmother did.)
I do love cornbread with butter and maple syrup for breakfast, so I will be trying your recipe soon.

Wonderful! And I love that you say the right kind of cornbread is the one you grew up with. If everyone could just understand that food is a very personal issue and that there are very few absolutes, there wouldn't be all those feuds about Texas chili versus Cincinnati chili or what's the right kind of barbecue sauce.

An old boyfriend of mine learned to eat his Southern (non-sweet) cornbread broken up in a glass with buttermilk poured over. I grew up in the south but my parents were from the north and the only time I ever had cornbread was at the school cafeteria. I sorta feel like I missed out on a part of my Southern birthright!

Lovely story of baking with your kiddo, and next time I make cornbread, I'll sweeten with either maple syrup or maybe with sorghum. Either way, yum!
