Awesome! Thank you Button for such a tasty dinner! Mmmmm. We ( me, hubby, & 3 kiddos under10) destroyed this dish- not a drop left. Almost substituted water for wine. Ran to the store right quick and grabbed some- so glad i did. Excellent flavor. None of us had eaten this before and thanks to you and your tasty recipe- we've added this dish to our recipe box. Again-- THANK YOU!
Happy family.

Okay, had a hankering for this. My mother was from NC although I'm originally from NJ and now am transplanted to Chicago. I substituted left over spiral ham cut small for the bacon, red onion diced for the spring onions, and I didn't have wine, or Chipotle or cayenne so I used water and Chipotle chili powder.
I cooked the minced ham in butter with the onion until it was crispy, then added the garlic and shrimp (coated with the salt/pepper/chipotle chili powder. I sauteed and added water. I added too much so I took out the shrimp and threw them in the grits with the cheese and then reduced the butter/water flavorings to 1/2 and added that in. It wasn't pretty like yours but wow was it good! Thank you for the recipe.

I totally agree that grits have their own flavor. We're lucky enough to by them fresh and local and they actually taste like a little sweet like corn. So good!

Although most of my growing-up was in northern NJ, I've eaten grits all my life as my father was from Macon, GA. I LOVE grits - even plain; they really do have their own subtle flavor (as, by the way, does plain rice).
