Glad you mentioned asking the hostess if you can bring food. The tray is gorgeous and would be a welcome contribution...IF the hostess wants contributions. I entertain solo, and most of the time I don't. I do a lot of pre-planning, from the menu to the serve ware. I generally have an appetizer planned.

Having a guest arrive with surprise food throws me off my game, as I juggle opening the door, greeting guests, serving drinks and keeping dinner going. A charcuterie board would be delightful...if I know it's coming, AND it arrives on time. I've had guests bring appetizers, but not arrive until I was serving dessert. FAIL!

Always ask before bringing a contribution to the meal. Otherwise stick to candy, candles, gift baskets, etc. that the hosts can enjoy later.

We are pretty lucky too Christie! Sometimes I think it takes hosting a lot of guest to appreciate what it means to be a really awesome dinner guest.
